Cigarettes could become 30 times weaker as UK government ‘considers following new US law on nicotine limit’
The government announced plans last month to get 1.5million Brits to quit smoking by 2020
BRITAIN’S smokers are at risk of being hit by plans to make cigarettes 30 times weaker, it has been claimed.
The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed the strategy to encourage smokers to switch to e-cigarettes – and the UK government could follow suit, according to the Daily Star.
Department of Health officials reportedly met with the FDA to discuss the changes.
Campaigners believe the move could spark “the most fundamental change the tobacco industry has ever seen”.
But pro-smoking campaigners have blasted the plans as “desperate”.
Simon Clark, director of smokers’ group Forest, told the Star: “The whole idea smacks of desperation.

“Lowering nicotine levels in cigarettes won’t stop people smoking.
“For many people the pleasure of smoking has more to do with the ritual or the taste of tobacco.”
It comes as the government announced plans last month to get 1.5million Brits to quit smoking over the next five years – introducing new laws which will make the cheapest packets nearly £9.
As part of the new Tobacco Control Plan, health bosses will promote e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to traditional fags.
Campaigners Ash predict the UK could be smoke free – with less than one in 20 lighting up – by 2030.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 15.8 per cent of the population – 7.6million people – smoke, with another 2.6million people using e-cigs.
